In the afternoon of 17 March, Pan Delta Super Racing Festival’s qualifying sessions commences. From ZIC Superbike Championship at 1:55pm, to Circuit Hero (One) at 4:30pm, Over three thousand fans arrived at the track to witness the qualifying battles.      As qualifying affects the starting orders of the drivers, everyone tries hard to set a good time. A car’s performance is maximised and experienced spectators can tell if a caris performing to its best ability.

First on the track are the ZIC Superbikes. The sky clears just in time and bright sunshine greets all the riders. As it is the first race of the year, some riders are a little rusty. In the end, the top 3 riders are: Takuya Fujita (1:38.048), Dan Kruger was second and Huang Shi-Zhao (1:40.996). In the second session at 3:40pm, once again Takuya Fujita sets the best time 1:38.528 to take pole position, Li Zheng-Peng is second with 1:40.390 and Huang Shi-Zhao takes third place with 1:41.302.

Circuit Hero (Two)’s qualifying sees very fierce competition. 34 different makes of cars all trying to outdo each other. There are familiar faces like “Baldy” He Wei-Hang and there is also a female driver Wu Mu-Lian.

At 2:32pm, no. 86 Honda loses control and brushes the barrier at turn 4 and stops in the middle of the track. At the same time no. 39 also stops at turn 8. The two accidents combined to make the race control show the red flag. After the accidents have been cleared, the session re-starts. In the end, Macanese driver Jerome Badaracco sets a 1:51.928 to take pole position overall. Huang Yun-Long takes second in his Honda DC5 while Baldy He Wei-Hang takes third place in his Honda Civic.

The last qualifying session of the day is Circuit Hero (One). There are more big engined machines in this group, like Nissan GTR and Mitsubishi Evolution. There are many familiar faces like James Tang, Sun Tit-Fan and Tung Sai-Cheong. At 4:10pm, warm-up begins and before too long Sun Tit-Fan sets a quick time 1:42.074, more than 4 seconds quicker than James Tang. Considering a Formula Renault can only do about 1:37, this is an amazing time for a saloon.

In the race schedule tomorrow, there are two races planned for this class, allowing them more opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. It will also give the drivers the opportunity to gain more experience. This is what Pan Delta is about, grooming and nurturing local drivers. Can Sun Tit-Fan triumph tomorrow? See it for yourself tomorrow!
